Marijuana smoke is more harmful than tobacco smoke

19.12.2007 The smoke produced when smoking marijuana contains higher levels of toxic substances than tobacco smoke. This is the conclusion reached by Canadian researchers who studied its chemical composition using special "smoking machines".

By now, many studies have been conducted on the composition of tobacco smoke and the identification of potential carcinogens - substances whose impact on the body under certain conditions causes cancer. However, similar studies on marijuana smoke have been virtually non-existent. Meanwhile, the number of marijuana smokers has increased recently, especially among young people, the researchers note. Having decided to fill this gap, the study's leader David Moir and his colleagues analyzed the content of toxic substances in the smoke produced by smoking marijuana.

It turned out that the qualitative composition of tobacco smoke and smoke from marijuana cigarettes is almost identical, but the quantitative content of toxic substances differs significantly. The smoke formed when smoking marijuana contained 20 times more ammonia than tobacco smoke. The level of hydrogen cyanide, nitrogen oxide, and some aromatic amines that contribute to the development of cancer was 3-5 times higher than in the smoke from regular cigarettes.

The new findings provide fresh information about the risks associated with marijuana use and have important public health implications, scientists say.
