Germany to Treat 51-Year-Old Woman with Cannabis Extract24.08.2007Germany is planning to treat with marijuana. The first such experiment in the country's history begins at the end of August and will last for a year: under the supervision of doctors, a 51-year-old woman suffering from multiple sclerosis will receive a pain-relieving cannabis extract from a pharmacy.
As our correspondent Konstantin Kuts reports from Germany, the effectiveness of this painkiller must still be confirmed by a special medical commission. The woman was prescribed marijuana because, in the opinion of the attending physician, there is no other alternative to reduce her suffering. By law, cannabis is not included in the list of officially approved painkillers. Two years ago, the Federal Administrative Court of Germany ruled that the use of cannabis-based drugs in exceptional cases does not contradict the law. Several independent scientific studies have confirmed that cannabis-based drugs can relieve muscle spasms and pain. However, such therapy is considered only as a last resort. Pharmacologists do not rule out the imminent creation of cannabis-based drugs that relieve pain but are free of dangerous side effects.
