Scientists have discovered why people become drug addicts08/16/2007
Researchers at the US National Institute on Drug Abuse have found a reduction in dopamine activity in the brains of adults with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). People with it are more likely to use drugs to improve performance.
Dopamine is a neurotransmitter, a biologically active chemical that in the human brain transmits emotional reactions and allows you to feel pleasure and pain. Researchers know that people with ADHD are more likely than others to smoke and abuse alcohol, marijuana, cocaine and other drugs, writes vz.ru. Reduced dopamine activity in people with ADHD explains why this happens. Study author Nora Volkow noted: "If you use an addictive substance, be it alcohol, nicotine or cocaine, you temporarily increase the concentration of dopamine in the brain." People with attention deficit disorder use drugs to feel better and perform better.
