Marijuana to be made into a painkiller
Researchers at the University of Texas intend to begin developing a new generation of painkillers based on synthetic cannabinoids - the active components of marijuana.
As specialists from the University Medical Research Center have established, artificially synthesized cannabinoids are capable of blocking nerve pathways responsible for pain sensitivity. Due to this property, cannabinoids are a very promising material for the development of painkillers that can be used during surgeries, as well as to alleviate the suffering of patients suffering from chronic inflammatory diseases, such as arthritis.
According to research project coordinator Dr. Kenneth Hargreaves, the modified chemical formula of artificial cannabinoids, as well as their use in small dosages, allowed scientists to avoid the psychotropic effect characteristic of naturally occurring cannabinoids.
