By the fingers of the hand09/07/2007
The capital's drug police yesterday published ominous statistics: the number of schoolchildren using drugs has doubled compared to last year: there were four - now there are nine! Experts interviewed by NI unanimously say: the figures are understated by hundreds of times. More than 300 young Muscovites with a diagnosis of drug addiction are registered in clinics alone. The schoolchildren themselves admitted to NI that at least a third of them indulge in "weed". Oddly enough, almost all of them are from wealthy families. The main reason for their pernicious habit is that educational institutions cannot offer any alternative to "joints" and "wheels".
The Federal Drug Control Service for Moscow and the region is seriously concerned about the growing number of teenagers caught using drugs. "Since the beginning of this year, our officers have detained 109 students, including 68 students, 32 people receiving secondary vocational education, and 9 schoolchildren," Anna Smirnova, an employee of the public relations department of the Federal Drug Control Service for Moscow, told Novye Izvestia. "For comparison, during the same period last year, 50 people were detained, including 31 students, 15 students of vocational schools and technical schools, and four schoolchildren. The youngest person detained was only seven years old." The figures cited, according to experts interviewed by NI, indicate one thing: drug addiction among teenagers has become so widespread that identifying each one is like trying to scoop out the sea with a teaspoon. "It is unclear where the State Drug Control Service got such data from," Oleg Zykov, president of the No to Alcoholism and Drug Addiction Foundation, told NI. "There are simply no statistics that would take into account all schoolchildren who are drug addicts. But we can say that in Moscow, 300 schoolchildren with a diagnosis of drug addiction are registered. In fact, there are ten times more." As Veronika Gotlib, a doctor at the Kvartal rehabilitation center, told NI, more than 50 underage drug addicts are admitted to them alone every year. It is practically impossible to establish the exact number, since teachers and parents have little idea about the child's addiction. By the way, school drug addiction is mainly a disease of megacities. "Teenagers from wealthy families most often turn to drugs, and they mainly use weed or so-called synthetic drugs - for example, "ecstasy". This seems safer to them," Nikolai Kartashov, head of the public relations center of the Federal Drug Control Service, explained to "NI". The Novye Izvestia correspondents attempted to conduct an independent statistical investigation. Near the school where we came, young people were smoking cigarettes and discussing whether to try something stronger. "Last year, a lot of us smoked weed," admitted two expensively dressed seventh-graders. "In the spring, we often tried marijuana - the older students treated us to it. Now is not the season for weed, so we don't see any fans of it yet. But by the end of autumn, you can meet kids with red eyes and blissful smiles at every step." We also heard much more frank confessions. "I think that a third of our students dabble in weed," ninth-grader Vika believes. "I haven't heard of hard drugs, but it seems that we also use synthetics." Doctors are convinced that the number of young drug addicts is growing because drug use has become attractive. In other words, it's cool. "For teenagers who feel that they lack the respect of others, turning to drugs is the easiest way to gain at least the illusion of confidence," says Veronica Gottlieb. "I don't rule out that for many high school students, drug dealing is the surest way to make some extra money." All the experts interviewed by NI agree on one thing: the main reason for teenage drug addiction is boredom. "The process of rejuvenation of drug addicts and the spread of drugs in schools is connected with the fact that schools have lost their educational function," says Sergei Komkov, president of the All-Russian Education Fund. "Even in Moscow, there are almost no school clubs or sports sections left. Education has been given over to parents, and they continue to consider it the responsibility of teachers. So it turns out that drug use by children is not monitored by any adults." ALEXEY OLSHANSKY, EVGENY SHIPILOV
