Marijuana to Become a Seasoning in Indonesia11.07.2007
Indonesian authorities may allow the use of marijuana as a seasoning for food, Reuters reports, citing the local newspaper Jakarta Post. According to the newspaper, Indonesian Vice President Jusuf Kalla, who opposes the legalization of marijuana in principle, said he does not object to its use for culinary purposes - as a seasoning. "It goes well with seasonal dishes, but it cannot be completely legalized," the newspaper quotes the Indonesian politician, who comments on a study recently conducted by two drug enforcement agencies - the National Narcotics Agency (BNN) and the Indonesian National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA).
In particular, the agencies recommended that the Indonesian government reconsider its position on the legalization of marijuana and allow its use for so-called “recreational” purposes – that is, for recreation. In addition, the authors of the study insisted, in the Indonesian province of Aceh, many dishes, including meat curry, are prepared using marijuana seeds , which is a traditional spice for the area. Ratna Dwikora, the owner of one of the restaurants specializing in Aceh cuisine, claims that “ marijuana is used in local cooking in the same way as, for example, coriander.” Tomi Harjatno, an expert at the National Narcotics Agency, stresses that Indonesia should follow the example of countries like the Netherlands, where the purchase and use of marijuana for personal use is permitted. He argues that marijuana , unlike other drugs, does not cause chemical reactions in the human brain, and its use does not lead to irreversible personality changes.
Today, Indonesia imposes the harshest penalties for drug crimes, including the death penalty. Last month, five Chinese nationals, a Dutchman and a Frenchman were sentenced to death for drug crimes. Last year, police on the resort island of Bali arrested six Australians for heroin smuggling – all of whom were also sentenced to death. Growing marijuana is punishable by 10 years in prison.
