Marijuana is more profitable than corn

John Gettman, former head of the National Organization on Drug Abuse, announced the results of a study of the drug situation in the United States. Every year, 10,000 tons of hemp are grown in America, more than wheat and corn combined. Hemp brings in $36 billion in profit. For comparison: from 2003 to 2005, the United States grew corn for $23.3 billion, soybeans for $17.6 billion, vegetables for $11.1 billion, and wheat for $7.4 billion. Over 15 years, the hemp harvest has increased 10-fold.

Most drugs are produced in California, Tennessee, Kentucky, and Washington. California is the undisputed leader in this area. Here the drug crop is worth 13.8 billion dollars.

Drug Enforcement Administration spokesman Tom Riley would not confirm the cannabis yield figures. But he did say the illegal marijuana trade in the US is estimated at $200 billion annually.
